Thirst

Thirst

I wake up in the middle of the night overwhelmed by a deep ache.  What is the deal?!  I’d much rather be snoozing away, but something has distracted me from the deep slumbers of the night.

Thirst.

My body was screaming for a tall glass of cold, fresh water.

Why now?  Why not when I wake up in a few hours?

Our bodies are strange.  They know so much more about what they need than their owners.  Warning sign such as headaches, tiredness, stomach aches to let us know what it needs and when.

I’m not always good at drinking water on a regular basis.  If I don’t have a water bottle by my side throughout the day, chances are I will not be drinking as much water as I should be.  And after a few days a drinking only a few glasses of water, I wonder why I’m tired, low energy, headache ridden and mentally cloudy.

It seems like such an easy problem to fix.  Just drink more water.  Done.  Healed.  But for some reason, it’s something that I am always having to remind myself to do.

What about with our spiritual lives?  We crave to find something, anything, to fill a void in our lives.  Or the opposite is also true; we so stubbornly believe that we can do life in our own strength, with our own wisdom, in our own way…nothing to hold us back.  We create our own gods by seeking attention, fulfillment, love from dead sources, and we are left more thirsty than before.

Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again.  Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst — not ever.  The water I give will be an artesian spring within, gushing fountains of endless life.” —John 4:13-14 (MSG)

Later, Jesus also exclaims, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”  — John 7:37b-38 (NIV)

The things of this life are temporary.  Fleeting.  Unfulfilling.  But Christ is eternal.  He IS the LIVING water.

When we are thirsty, we crave water.  But it won’t be long before we’re thirsty again; just like the lifeless gods and idols we distract ourselves with.  But when we taste the truth of the living God, we are filled.

Joy.
Peace.
Love.
Life.

We begin to crave Him.  Seeking Him daily to fill our cups with His living water.

Run to him — for he has what you’re looking for.

“Open your mouths and taste, open your eyes and see — how good God is.  Blessed are you who run to him.”  — Psalm 34:8 (MSG)
