Dig a Little Deeper

Dig a Little Deeper

I recently started chiropractic therapy to help fix some problems I've been having.  Part of the therapy includes medical massage...which, at first, I was a little excited to "have" to go in for a massage.  But I took a look at the technique and got a little nervous.  I had had a similar therapy done on my knee last year, and it wasn't exactly a day at the beach.

Instead of hot stones, it includes metal tools (similar to a butcher cleaver and mortar).  In order to break up the facia that is causing problems, these tools are used to knead the muscles and draw blood to those areas in order to promote healing.   A painful process necessary to heal.

Healing.

I think we often think of "healing" and just think of the end result...healed.  We like to think of it as more of a past tense, insinuating that the process is behind us so we can just move on with our lives.  But that's, most often, not the case.

Healing hurts.  You can ignore areas in your life that need attention and pretend they will just "get better" over time.  However, what I've learned is that is not how healing works.  In the case of my back, I haven't taken the necessary steps over the years to help heal and fix my problems.  I've looked past the problems in hopes that a little heat and ice would cure them, but most of the time I just ignored them all together.  However, instead of getting better they have gotten worse over the years. Now, I am having to go through more pain in healing than if I addressed the issues 10 years ago.

My point is this: sometimes, problems fix themselves and fizzle their way out of our lives if we just let nature take its course...but, more often than not, this is not the case.  Healing hurts, so we avoid the process.  It's in our very nature to seek survival, to avoid pain and the take the easiest way out of most situations.  Buried deep within ourselves hides the pain, regret, un-forgiveness, bitterness and hurt.  If we don't move forward and takes those steps towards healing, those things will begin to within our lives and only inhibit us from healing.

Even gold has to go through the rigorous process of extreme heat to clean itself of impurities.  And coal must encounter extreme pressures to become a diamond.

Pain hurts.  But if we don't go through the process of healing we will never experience the freedom that healing has to offer.

With my back, my muscles are sore, bruised and in pain.  But, if I don't walk through this process of working out those knots, scraping away at the facia and adjusting the position of my spine, I will never heal; and years down the road I could, as a result, have a lot more issues to deal with.

It's going to hurt.  It's going to be uncomfortable.  But, it's only for a season.  Even winter's death brings life to the spring.

"'For I know the plans I have for you', says the Lord  'Plans to prosper you and not to harm you.  Plans to give you a hope and a future'...you will seek me and find me when you see me with all your heart.  I will be found by you." Jeremiah 29:11, 13-14a (emphasis added)

He knows.  He gets it.  He cares, more than you will ever know.  He promises to never leave us, nor forsake us.  He has BIG plans for your life, and he knows that today's pain will bring tomorrow's joy.  You can trust Him.  The cool thing about healing is you don't have to go through it alone.  He has always been there, and always will.

So, what are you waiting for?  What's holding you back from taking the necessary steps towards healing?  What hurt relationships, pain, unforgiveness There is an end to all seasons, but every ending needs a beginning.  Take that step, move towards healing and trust that God will always be there to lift you up.
